From back in the day when we could all go to gigs. Really missing this now.

You’ll find the full transcript below:

Bruce:

Hi everybody. Once again, I need to do an introduction to this music video, because everything has changed. We actually filmed this review of the Shawn Mendes concert back in November 2019, five months ago. And since then, of course, the virus has turned our world upside down. So, this video is actually a window into life on the border of music and advertising as it used to be. It’s very different now. And sadly, it highlights what the virus has taken away from us. Fans having a fabulous time, a night out. Young girls enjoying the rite of passage that they’re entitled to. And all the musicians and roadies and everybody else earning a living. My thoughts certainly go out to them. Anyway, let’s be positive. Let’s hope that that life comes back to us real soon.

Well, here we are, on the Vlog again. And today we’re going to review the Shawn Mendes concert that we went to last night. Shawn Mendes, what’d you think of it?

Clare:

If you really want to hear good rendition of the song, stick to the recorded version, because there, everything is perfect. The idea of a concert is have a party, and that’s what they were doing.

Bruce:

It was a party. But you see, it’s different. This is pop music, young pop idol. When we went to Fleetwood Mac, everybody’s sitting there listening to the music like it’s a symphony orchestra. And they were note-perfect. So, let’s talk about the audience. I reckon 90% of the audience was girls between the age of about 12 and 17.

Clare:

Yeah.

Bruce:

9% of the audience was their parents. And us. So, it’s a different kind of audience. They were screaming their heads off. When the Beatles came out to Australia in the sixties, and they invented Beatlemania, they had these concerts where there was so much screaming, and they had these tiny little amps. Nothing like today. You couldn’t hear anything. It was just screaming. And I think at the time, everybody thought, “Oh, this is Beatlemania.” But it’s actually a rite of passage. It’s what young girls do when they go to pop concerts. So, it hasn’t changed.

Clare:

Also, for the sound guys, it’s very hard to get the levels right, because the screaming is so loud, and then they’ve got to try and adjust things so you can get the music as well without feedback and all.

Bruce:

Oh, the other thing I have to say about Shawn Mendes. I mean, he writes great songs. They’re great pop songs. You hear them on the radio, they’re fantastic. But when he’s performing, those girls weren’t there to hear the songs. They were there because they’re in love. Every single one of them is passionately in love with Shawn Mendes. And he’s a heart-throb. So, who cares about the music? But why do we go? We’re so the odd ones out. Why do we go? Why do you think we go?

Clare:

Oh, we enjoy music. All kinds of music.

Bruce:

All kinds.

Clare:

I love pop music.

Bruce:

I mean, part of the reason I go is because I’m a student of music and culture. It’s part of the business to understand what’s going on out there. And I just love the cultural experience. But more than anything, I like to go because it makes me feel alive.

Clare:

Yes.

Bruce:

Yes. Anyway, I did take some footage to illustrate the screaming, so let’s finish, have a look at that. If you like the vlog, please subscribe, share, whatever. Thank you. Bye.

Clare:

Bye.

Shawn Mendez:

(singing).

All right, Sydney. Here we go.
