Yes, we went to a real concert with performers and an audience! Featuring Australia’s indie darling Julia Stone, who gave us a kick-arse show. Wonderful that it’s all coming back, and a big thank you to BMG.

Bruce:

Welcome back to our music licensing VLOG. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Bit of a hiatus over the summer. We actually went to a real live concert, not one of those streaming things where you sit in your jammies and watch the laptop screen. It was fantastic at last. Say hello to Spikey while we are here. He’s grown up a bit over the summer. Hey, Spike. So our state of New South Wales, I think we’ve gone, I don’t know, 40 or 50 days without a community case of Covid, which is just extraordinary, and it means we could go to a concert. So what’d you think of Julia Stone?

Clare:

I was very impressed. I really enjoyed it. It was not what I expected.

Bruce:

What did you expect?

Clare:

Something a bit more subdued and whimsical, but this was really good stuff. I loved her trumpet playing, I must say.

Bruce:

But we kind of expected her to be a bit waif-like, didn’t we?

Clare:

Yes, and she wasn’t.

Bruce:

Now, I’ll actually quote you what The Sydney Morning Herald said about it. “A lot grittier and a good deal more grown up. The folk pop princess is no more.” Well, I’d have to agree. It was certainly a lot stronger than I thought it was going to be. And how was it going to a concert after all this time?

Clare:

That was really enjoyable. Just being out with people, live music, that was really, really good.

Bruce:

And how was it set up, the venue?

Clare:

It was all seating. So we all had our delegated spaces.

Bruce:

No dancing, no jumping around, no jiggling.

Clare:

You could jiggle in your chair.

Bruce:

You could jiggle in your chair.

Clare:

Dance with your shoulders.

Bruce:

And I do need to say a big thank you to our friends at BMG who invited us to the concert. They represent Julia Stone these days, so thank you to Cameron and Heath. They organized a meet and greet. We go into Julia Stone’s dressing room, and it was incredibly crowded. And for a while, it was awkward. We’re just standing there like shags on a rock, as my mum would have said.

After a while, we got talking and we chatted about a rerecord sync job that she did for us a few years ago. We’d never met her. Anyway, she was delightful, of course. But the highlight of the whole evening was that she insisted on giving me a hug. You go back to last year and you think we’re never going to hug another human being ever again. Julia Stone gave me a hug. I was very chuffed about it. So here’s some footage of the concert. Hope you enjoy it. I thought it was wonderful. See you later. See you later.

Clare:

See you later.
