OUR BRAND PURPOSE

We do one thing – songs for advertising campaigns.  We used to do a lot of other things, but after a lot of intensive and expensive faffing about we realised that there are three enormous benefits that specialisation delivers:

  • Subject Matter Expertise – if you want to be really good at something difficult, you have to give it everything you’ve got. Doing just one thing means that we are honing very specific skills, every day.
  • Focus – if you try to do lots of different things, you get distracted. We are always concentrating on the core business, so we’re not spread thin.  (Unlike, say, some Sound Studios who offer music licensing as a side hustle.)
  • Conflict Of Interest – we know what our client obligations are: finding you the best song, and negotiating the best possible price. When people have fingers in other pies (such as representing artists, or having equity in publishing copyrights, or a stable of composers), then they can’t objectively and dispassionately advise their clients about best songs and best prices, because they have other agendas.

Since we locked onto our singular Brand Purpose about a decade ago, Music Mill has become laser focused and way more professional.  Which means that if you engage us you can be certain of two things – we will be 100% dedicated to delivering a song that meets your requirements; and we know what we are doing.

SOME HISTORY – HOW DID WE GET FROM THERE TO HERE?

We’ve been in business for a quarter of a century, and we learnt these lessons the hard way.  At various times we were seduced by the siren song of Diversification.  We tried:

  • Launching a publishing company so that we could own some IP in the products we were delivering. But eventually I realised the implications of the conflict of interest, and we decided that clean hands were more important than double dipping on the fees.
  • Composition, so that we could help clients who wanted a bespoke tune instead of an existing song. We spent a lot of time creating a world class roster and set to work spruiking their services.  Turned out to be a loss maker and a distraction from the core business.
  • Music for films and TV series – which was a nightmare, because it diluted our expertise, and diverted our attention from the main game.
  • Library Music – at one point we launched a service where we would search the catalogues from the vendors of production music to find the perfect library track. But one of our core value points is navigating through complex licensing deals, and library music ain’t that.

I try not to think about the enormous number of wasted hours, but really nothing in life is wasted.  We needed to go through all that pain to get where we are today, totally wedded to our raison d’être and never happier.

So you’ve come to the right place.  If you have something you need help with, please email info at musicmill.com.au and one of us will get back to you in a blink.
